Precision Earthwork and Large-Volume Material Management
Grade sets everything that follows. If the dirt is wrong, the utilities, the concrete, and the building all inherit the problem. P&A Civil handles the earthwork and grading that gets a site to plan: stripping, mass excavation, cut and fill, structural fill, building-pad preparation, and finish subgrade. We self-perform this work across the South Puget Sound for developers, general contractors, and public agencies.
Site Development Earthwork for Public and Private Projects
Earthwork is the first phase of nearly every site development job, and how it's planned decides the schedule for everything downstream. We balance the site to cut haul cost, build stable subgrade (the compacted soil layer that carries the pavement and slabs above it), and shape the drainage the design depends on. Where a plan needs engineered ground, we place structural fill, meaning imported soil laid down and compacted in thin lifts so it can hold building loads. On the same project our crews carry the work straight into underground utilites, so grade and trench decisions get made by one team instead of two.
Roadway Grading, Building Pads, and Subgrade Preparation
Earthwork Projects
Different surfaces need different subgrade. A warehouse slab, a public road, and a residential lot each carry their own compaction and tolerance requirements, and we build subgrade to the spec the structure calls for. Our grading feeds directly into roadway construction and pad-ready delivery for vertical builders.
Mass Excavation, Cut and Fill, and Material Movement
Earthwork Projects
Large sites live and die on dirt balance. We plan cut and fill, which balances a site by moving material from the high areas down into the low ones, to keep material on site where the geotech allows it, and we coordinate import and export when the numbers call for it.
GPS Grading for Accurate Site Preparation
Earthwork Projects
Machine control keeps grade tight and rework low. Running models in the cab means an operator hits design grade on the first pass instead of staking, checking, and cutting again. It shows up most on large pads and long roadway runs, where small errors multiply.
What to Expect on an Earthwork Project
Most earthwork jobs move through the same sequence, and knowing it helps you read the schedule. Throughout, we track compaction, which means densifying the soil to a specified target and confirming it with density testing before more material goes on top.
- Mobilize equipment and set erosion control, so soil stays put through the wet months.
- Clear the site and strip topsoil, setting the organic material aside from the ground that will carry load.
- Run the mass cut and fill, moving dirt to rough grade and balancing the site.
- Place structural fill in lifts, checking density on each layer before the next one goes down.
- Trim subgrade to design grade and tolerance.
- Hand off a graded, stable site to the utility and paving crews.
